Lipid Disorders & Atherosclerosis

Lipid disorders refer to abnormal concentrations of cholesterol, triglycerides, or various lipoproteins in the bloodstream, all of which contribute notably to the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis. Elevated low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol is particularly concerning, as it tends to accumulate within arterial walls and promote the formation of atherosclerotic plaques, ultimately narrowing vessel lumens and impeding blood flow. In contrast, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) serves a protective function by facilitating the removal of excess cholesterol from circulation.

Dyslipidemia is associated with a substantially increased risk of adverse cardiovascular events—including myocardial infarction, stroke, and peripheral artery disease. Atherosclerosis itself is a progressive process characterized by lipid accumulation, chronic inflammation, and endothelial dysfunction. The resultant plaque formation leads to arterial stiffening, compromised perfusion, and, in some cases, plaque rupture and subsequent thrombosis. Major risk factors encompass poor dietary habits, physical inactivity, obesity, diabetes, tobacco use, and genetic predisposition.

Management strategies emphasize lifestyle modification—specifically, dietary changes, increased physical activity, and weight management. Pharmacologic interventions, such as statins, fibrates, or PCSK9 inhibitors, are employed when indicated by clinical guidelines. Early detection and intervention are vital for mitigating plaque progression, reducing cardiovascular risk, and promoting long-term vascular health. Regular monitoring and patient education remain integral to effective management of lipid disorders.
